New RPP certificate for Bolpeat

A successful test-case for certification of temporarily available batches of peat

RPP has initiated the certification of peat sourced from temporary projects with alternative purposes, such as nature development or construction. The Committee of Experts (CoE) selected the Weimeren nature development project as the first test case for this new certification process. Bolpeat B.V. is the company responsible for excavating peat for the successful realization of the Dutch "Weimeren" nature development project, which focuses on hydrological and ecological restoration.

To facilitate proper assessment of the project, the original RPP checklist (version 3.0) was adapted. Working collaboratively with the company, the checklist was completed, followed by a desk assessment and an on-site inspection by the inspector. The inspector confirmed that the updated checklist effectively supported a comprehensive assessment

Having met all RPP criteria, the peat from the Weimeren project is now officially certified. Bol Peat BV, the company responsible for excavating the peat, reported that the material is used in the production of mushroom casing.

The process of completing the checklist proved more complex than usual, as Bolpeat was contracted by the nature development project, requiring significant input from the project team. However, with experience, the process is expected to become more streamlined.

The CoE is now prepared for a second test case, focusing on peat sourced from projects other than nature development, for example from preparations for construction.

The certification can be checked on the webpage Issued RPP-certificates.
